Advanced First Aid - AFA
This course enables the participant to carry out advanced first aid, which enables the treatment and stabilization of the injured for a longer period of time. The course is aimed at individuals and organizations who travel and work in areas where the possibility of professional help and rapid evacuation is reduced. Such as in war-torn countries, desolate areas with longer distances to big cities, and countries with inadequate medical care or increased risk of diseases.
Description
Advanced First Aid training is important before travelling because it helps you to be better prepared to handle emergencies that may arise while you are away from home. Knowing what to do in a medical emergency can be the difference between life and death. In addition, being trained in Advanced First Aid can also help you to feel more comfortable and capable when travelling to areas where medical care may not be readily available or may not be of the same quality as what you are used to at home.
Our course aims to teach individuals how to provide medical care in emergencies. This can include everything from basic life support, such as CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), to more advanced medical procedures, such as handling massive bleeding and the use of an individual first aid kit.
Overall, the goal of our Advanced First Aid training is to help individuals to become confident and capable of providing medical care in a variety of emergencies, and to be able to make informed decisions about the best course of action regarding the emergency.
The content of this course is based on the latest guidelines and recommendations from leading medical organisations and extensive experience from the military, police, and special forces in Denmark. The course content can be tailored to meet the specific needs and requirements of the group being trained. For example, a course for media professionals, NGO workers, or security personnel may focus on providing medical care in austere or field conditions, while a course for corporate travellers may focus more on providing medical care in a variety of different settings.
The core of the Advanced First Aid training is built upon the M-A-B-C algorithm which ensures that the travellers are given easily used tools and specialised knowledge on how to identify potential life-threatening injuries as well as save lives using the first aid skills in a prioritised order.
Target group
Our Advanced First Aid training is targeted towards individuals who may be at higher risk of encountering medical emergencies while travelling, or who may be responsible for the well-being and safety of others while travelling. This could include:
- Travellers to remote or developing countries, where medical care may be limited or less advanced than what is available in more developed countries.
- Tour operators, guides, and other travel professionals who may be responsible for leading groups of travellers and ensuring their safety.
- Corporate travellers, who may be required to travel frequently for work and may need to be prepared to handle emergencies while on the road.
- Adventure travellers, who may be engaging in activities that carry an increased risk of injury or illness.
Overall, Advanced First Aid training in the context of travel security is aimed at individuals who need to be prepared to provide medical care in potentially challenging or hazardous conditions.
Purpose and objectives
Our Advanced First Aid training is designed to provide individuals with the skills and knowledge to respond to a wide range of medical emergencies that they may encounter in a travel security setting. This can include everything from treating minor injuries and illnesses to providing life-saving interventions in the event of major trauma. The purpose of this training is to enable the participant to provide timely and appropriate medical care, and to help prevent minor injuries from becoming more serious.
Key learning objectives – at the end of the course the participants will:
-
Gain knowledge on the three stages of trauma care and perform ordinary and lifesaving first aid using the M-A-B-C algorithm in hostile environments.

Teaching and study methods
Taxonomic structure:
Our well-tested learning process builds on a 3-phase methodology of crawl, walk, and run to get the full perspective of the learning objectives. We test the participants' newly gained skills in realistic scenario training and practical skill stations.
The individual in focus:
The material and learning objectives focus on the individual gaining knowledge and skills. The individual course participant learns by participating in interactive group work, to create dialogue and reflection. The intention is to get the individual participant to engage and commit to the learning process through communication and cooperation with the other participants. With this approach, we provide the opportunity for knowledge and experience sharing, to achieve greater depth in the learning outcome.
Learning environments:
We use alternating learning environments, role-playing, and practical exercises built on scientific and experience-based knowledge to achieve our vision of developing skills that can be converted to different locations and cultural settings.
