Description
Our Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) is one of Guardian’s core services. The course gives experienced and non-experienced travellers easily used tools and specialised knowledge, ensuring that every possible threat is easily mitigated when travelling in high to extreme-risk environments. The training content builds upon a scientific basis as well as more than two decades of operative experience within the security industry.
We conduct around 20-25 HEAT courses per year and dozens of shorter courses. Recently we have experienced an increase in demand both in Scandinavia and other regions. Our clients come from various organisations including government, NGOs, media and private businesses. The growth in demand for our HEAT services stems from our uncompromising focus on delivering quality training that has an actual impact on the participants’ awareness and behaviour.
The satisfaction of the course participants is key to us, and we work tirelessly to improve and adapt to new knowledge. We are proud to have an average user satisfaction score of 9.3/10 for the courses conducted in 2022.
Target group
Our HEAT course is designed for individual travellers from various sectors. From media professionals, charities, international non-governmental organisations, and national/international governmental stakeholders as well as companies who find their employees travelling in unfamiliar and often hostile locations. We recommend our HEAT course before all travels going to high and extreme-risk areas.

Teaching and study methods
Taxonomic structure:
Our well-tested learning process builds on a 3-phase methodology of crawl, walk, and run to get the full perspective of the learning objectives. We test the participants' newly gained skills in realistic scenario training using extensive roleplay.
The individual in focus:
The material and learning objectives focus on the individual gaining knowledge and skills. The individual course participant gains learning by participating in interactive group work, to create dialogue and reflection. The intention is to get the individual participant to engage and commit to the learning process through communication and cooperation with the other participants. By having this approach, we provide the opportunity for knowledge and experience sharing, to achieve greater depth in the learning outcome.
Learning environments:
We use alternating learning environments, role plays, and practical exercises built on scientific and experience-based knowledge to reflect our vision of developing skills that can be converted to different locations and cultural settings.
Instructors
At Guardian, we strive to deliver the best, most realistic, and most relevant content possible in our courses. When striving to do so, we require a unique skillset from our instructors. We only use instructors with extensive knowledge and experience in the field of travel security. Our trainers not only educate regularly but also work within their respective fields daily, mostly in high to extreme-risk environments which enables us to always have an up-to-date basis for our training courses.
